Multi-functional towers in deserted spot: Speed's
effects on space
|
|
In the last decades economic growth and population raising in cities have pushed to colonize up to now deserted spots.
Our
mission consists in giving an answer to these new necessities this situation
has originated.
It
has been necessary to design an office resort for executives from all over
the world, that gives service to the demands of this new labor model.
The
prototype has been built in one of the M-40 nodes, a place with one of the
highest densities of train and car traffic in Madrid.
|
The most common way to achieve the area is by car.
The
resort is compounded by several towers, that occupy the spaces between roads
and rails. They lay inside the node. The intention is double: on the one hand
they work as a landmark, on the other they let us perceive traffic velocity
and building's speed themselves.
Towers
are connected among them by pedestrians' bridges allowing people to walk from one tower
to the others, crossing over the roads and rails.
They work as an artificial
landscape.
|
|
It is also possible to arrive to this resort by train, considering that that rails are part of the project as well.
We
can even land on the resort using one of the heliports provided in the
highest towers. Again, perception of speed and space changes due to our new
point of view and reference.
|
|
Every different tower, thanks to their form and position, intend to remark speed that surrounds them.
Highway
nodes are unstable places that really show up the velocity they keep inside.
The
driver that crosses this node is more conscious of his speed thanks to the towers
and their connectors. That as an example the feeling we have when we see
telephone post though the train's window.
Someone
looking from the tower's window has a different vision of cars than the one
he's used to.
Velocities are mentally associated
to continuous lines.
Speed reveals a unbalance. The towers
position as well as their shape and connectors follow the same instability
and chaos principle.

Habitable solution
A modular system that can be used for different scales is designed. It is a light structure prefabricated system of sliding pannels.
Texture and opacities superposition will solve any necessity that may appear.
We design a kit containing different panels, structure and connectors that is easy to build up and cheap to transport, not forgetting aesthetics.
This 2x2x1m room is designed to be a shelter for people that otherwise would sleep homeless. It can be considered a piece of urban furniture, can be of private property (lowcost) or belong to statal organizations encharged of their distribution, set-up and fold-down.
These pieces change their selfperception depending whether its day or night, dued to the superpositioned filter system of sliding pannels.
This system can be used in a larger scale. Using the same module of 2x2x1m, a house can be built.
The game of oppacities and textures gives construction a new freedom. Night light changes completely our perception of the piece.

Contemporary Architecture Documentation Center
Casa de Campo, Madrid
A lonely module is designed to be the Contemporary Architecture Documentation Center. It is a heavy concrete flat stone that has been hollowed out for the most. The heaviness of the lose has sunken part of the slope on which it reposes, leaving a print.

In the interior, the thick walls reinforce the massivity of the building, on the contrast with the lightness of the glass delimitating the yard. The thickness (excessive under the stairs)can be used for installations, closets or auxiliar rooms. Stairs appear sculpted on those walls.
Illumination is guaranteed through the central opening on the roof. In some cases, rooms open to the big yard, in other, light breaks the whole object. by this way, the entrance hall is illuminated. Light comes directly from the roof (3 floors over) illuminating the exposition's room stairs and creates an access space to the theater, at the same time this light separates cafeteria area from the rest of the lobby.
A light crevice comes to the street underlining the principal entrance under the tense shadow of the upper body. The public access to the building passing under the great superior prism, walking under its shadow, only broken by the light crevice, feeling the weight of the concrete. Then you pass from compressed to expanded space: the lobby opens to the sky.
The entrance to dwellings and offices is designed from the roof. On the point that the concrete body touches the land, a slot is opened. This drives in by sculpted stairs to the most private uses, guarantying independent access.
The lose separates from the land walls with the intention to remark the existance of a print, and to allow the illumination and ventilation of the rear rooms. As well, it is in the rear area that load and download is being done. The closest to the land area leaves enough place for a parking lot.
Doors appear as slots or crevices, they are up-down cuts in the thick walls.

Nike Store, Madrid
When we
exercise, every muscle works with the rest as one under a sole skin. Every
organ is specialized in one function, but does not lose its identity for being
part of a team, skin unifies and gives continuity.
